The BL rating is Mr. Nunamaker's prediction of how many lengths the horse will lose the race by. Naturally, this number is zero for predicted winners. This method of rating gives you an easy to understand rating of how strong the pick is. For example, some services will give you ratings such as 280.1, 264.4, etc.. What do they mean? Who knows? With Nunamaker's beaten lengths, things couldn't be clearer. Almost everyone that goes to the track knows what a beaten length is and it is something most race track patrons can relate to very easily.

All races also have a complete odds line. This odds line is Mike's computation of what fair odds should be for the horse. If a horse is going off at odds lower than this, you have a bad bet. If it is going off at higher odds, then you have an overlay, the best kind of bet.

Of primary interest to anyone using a selection service is how well does that selection service perform? Mr. Nunamaker began handicapping professionally for National Turf Phone Seminars in April of 1995 using his private software to make his daily selections. For the spring/summer Hollywood meet, Mr. Nunamaker's selections returned a profit of 24%. Extremely detailed performance statistics are available here. Up until now, Mr. Nunamaker's selections were only available for Southern California through National Turf, but now Minnow Bear Computers makes them available for a host of tracks throughout the country.

There are a host of touts and public handicappers. What sets Mr. Nunamaker apart from the rest of the crowd? It is his advanced computer research into handicapping. This research has made him the highest rated racing author in history. Naturally, the results of his research are incorporated into his selections to make them the best they can possibly be.

If you haven't heard about Mr. Nunamaker's racing research, it probably won't be too long before you do. His first racing book, Modern Impact Values was published in March of 1994 and has already received a slew of accolades and impressive reviews. He followed that up with a book on Longshots and then a huge series of track specific studies. Seven of these track specific studies were rated 9 1/2 by the prestigious Phillips Racing Newsletter making Mr. Nunamaker the recipient of more 9 1/2 ratings than any other author in racing history!

Mr. Nunamaker maintains one of the world's largest thoroughbred horse racing databases, currently over 55,000 races with over a third of a million starting horses! In addition to his published work, he has performed a substantial amount of yet unpublished research which is all used in his private software that prepares his daily selections. Totally obsessed with quality (the seven 9 1/2 ratings from the PRN kind of suggest that, don't they?), Mr. Nunamaker is continually finding ways to make his selections more accurate. His book on post par measurements, a totally new concept invented by Mr. Nunamaker, is surely indicative of his drive for perfection. These post pars were developed solely for improving the quality of his software (which they did!), and the book was an afterthought.

But don't take our word for it, listen to what other racing authors have written about Mr. Nunamaker's work.

The Reviews

"Every one in a while there surfaces an individual who truly revolutionizes our game. In the mid-70's, it was Andy Beyer, who showed us a new way to view the vagaries of speed. In the early 80's, it was William Quirin, who opened our eyes to the value of computer-generated handicapping data.

"Now, in the 90's, a new talent has emerged on the scene and his contributions have already helped scores of players turn the corner on the game! His name is Michael Nunamaker, and his work has made him the new-age 'guru' to the modern-day pro.

"His book, Modern Impact Values is a study that will literally show you where money can be made and cannot. His book, Longshots is unprecedented study of winners 10/1 and above. He's taken the world's largest thoroughbred database and crunched the numbers to a point where the most profitable longshot plays over the last three years are revealed. It makes the old Quirin studies look like child's play."

....David Powers, RPM Information Systems, publisher of Del Mar Digest

"My wish has been granted. The man riding in on the white horse is Michael Nunamaker. He's our knight in shining armor! His landmark book, "Modern Impact Values" presents an exhaustive study of all significant handicapping factors...His research covers more than 110,000 horses running in over 12,500 races. His results are genuine. They pass the most rigorous statistical tests ever devised by mere mortals. In fact, the gods on Mount Olympus have to be impressed as I am....The bottom line is this: If you don't have a copy of Nunamaker's study, you should get one as soon as possible. The cost is downright cheap. You couldn't replicate it for one-tenth of his price. These data are invaluable."

....Dick Mitchell, handicapper, lecturer and turf author, Cynthia Publishing

"I commend Mr. Nunamaker for what has to be the most complete and informative study ever done of this difficult game. Both the novice and the pro will benefit tremendously from this valuable data."

....John Boal, aka The Maiden Man, author of Get The Maiden Edge

(referring to Modern Impact Values) "Magnificent! This is what thoroughbred research should be!"

....Jim Bayle, author of numerous Beyer figure studies, Sports Stat

About Michael Nunamaker

A high honors Electrical engineering graduate of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, Mr. Nunamaker pursued thoroughbred horse racing as a hobby since 1979. From 1984 to the present time, Mr. Nunamaker has owned and operated a small computer software company. In March of 1994, his horse racing interests graduated from avocation to vocation when he published the critically acclaimed Modern Impact Values.

Since that time, Mr. Nunamaker has produced Thoroughbred racing material at a prodigious rate. His latest work Favorites! represents his thirteenth racing book in little more than 18 months. Amazingly, all of his books since Modern Impact Values have been very highly rated by the prestigious Phillips Racing Newsletter. An incredible seven of Mr. Nunamaker's books have been rated 9 1/2 by the PRN. To the best of our knowledge, no other racing author has earned more than a single 9 1/2 from the PRN making this accomplishment truly astounding.

Currently, Mr. Nunamaker spends the bulk of his time on computer consulting work.
